| Treasures of Istanbul |
Istanbul is one of the great cities of the world, the ancient city of Constantinople, the Sublime Porte, and capital of the Byzantine Empire. From 330 to 1453 AD it was fabulously wealthy, with its hippodrome, palaces and churches becoming a topic of legend. Istanbul is unique, no other city straddles two continents or has been the capital city of two empires. Its churches, mosques and palaces from this early history, with their fine mosaics and grand domes, bring this period vividly to life. Istanbul was the capital of the Ottoman Empire for 400 years, which, during the reign of Sultan Suleyman the Magnificent, outshone Constantinople, its predecessor, with its towering mosques and oriental bazaars. | Trip to Rome |
ROME REDISCOVERED Sunday 02 - Friday 07 October 2022 Led by the Arts Society accredited Lecturer, Stuart Harvey Rightfully renowned throughout the world for its wealth of history, art and architecture, Rome is an extraordinary city. It is simply impossible to explore everything that is on offer in a short trip, but even a few days in the Italian capital is enough to gain a sense of its remarkable cultural heritage. The seat of an empire which lasted centuries, a crucial site for the seismic development of art and architecture during the renaissance and home to some of the finest museums in the world, an understanding of Rome is critical for an understanding of western civilization as a whole. Our tour will bring to life some of the highlights of a capital drenched in historic sites and museums juxtaposed with some of the lesser well known areas and visits which sit outside the regular tourist programme. Our local guide, Stuart Harvey will focus on a city beyond the Vatican and the Roman Forum, encompassing areas around the Tiber such as the Jewish Ghetto and Trastevere, and a full day visit to Tivoli. | Cultural Trip to Malta and Gozo |
The Arts Society East Herts Overseas Tour to Malta and Gozo. This tour has been rescheduled from October 2020 Malta, crossroads of the Mediterranean, offers 7,000 years of history to explore, with an astonishing array of things to discover, and wherever you go, the island’s scenery and architecture provide a spectacular backdrop. The colours are striking: honey-coloured stone against the deepest of Mediterranean blues. What makes the island unique is that so much of its past is visible today. Malta has known many rulers during its history, from Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, and Byzantines to Islamic Saracens and Norman kings of Sicily to Bonaparte and the British. King George VI awarded the Maltese Islands the 'George Cross' for the heroism shown during the Second World War. Maltese, a Semitic language, has survived the influence of Romance languages for hundreds of years, though it bears traces of all its previous rulers. Malta is noted for its wealth of art and architecture and its fine crafts - particularly its handmade lace, handwoven fabrics, blown glass and silver filigree. | Transylvania and Beyond |
Our tour will cross central Romania from East to West, taking in the regions of Moldavia, Bucovina, Transylvania and Banat. Romania stands out for its rich cultural heritage and outstanding natural beauty. Nestled in the heart of Eastern Europe, its history is a tale of foreign conquest and staunch resistance. Long an important Roman province and the only Latin speaking state in the eastern part of the Roman Empire, Romania saw the gradual increase of Saxon influence and Ottoman expansionism during the medieval period before eventual unification of its principalities in 1881. Since then, it has been at the heart of Eastern European politics, resistant to Austro- Hungarian hegemony, subsumed by communist rule and since 2007 a member of the European Union. Our tour will bring to life some of the most dramatic cultural achievements from throughout Romanian history. The painted monasteries of Bucovina epitomise the strength of Romania’s Christian heritage in the face of Turkishinvasion in the 15th and 16th centuries. In addition to historic Romania, there will be plenty of time to enjoy thecountry’s dramatic landscape. From the spectacular Carpathian mountains to the winding Bicaz Gorges theRomanian countryside remains largely unspoiled. |
